An album-length choral cycle by Aaron Helgeson, performed by The Crossing under Donald Nally. The work draws on the thousand-year-old Novgorod Codex — one monk’s attempt to preserve the memory of an excommunicated community — weaving its recovered fragments together with words from defiant writers across the centuries, from Oscar Wilde and Pablo Neruda to Gertrude Stein and Angela Davis. Built from layered echoes of early Slavonic hymnody, it unfolds as a continuous meditation on loss, resistance, and the endurance of language.
